The Fishing is on fire up in Prien Lake
So I get a call from my friend, John, who lives in Lake Charles. He tells me they are catching limits of speckled trout and redfish in the northern end of Big Lake...all the way up to Prien lake. The fish have pushed baitfish up in the area and are slaughtering them. The baitfish run to the water's surface and then come the birds.
That's what fishermen need to look for. Gulls diving in the water for baitfish. Take your binoculars, find some birds working the water and head your boat in that direction. Kill the engine long before getting within casting range. Then throw just about any bait in your tackle box at the edges of the school of fish. You'll catch all you want...until your arms get tired.
I'll keep you updated on the fishing action in Lake Calcasieu as soon as I get another fishing report.
Update: Late January 2011 Fishing report: The fishing is still hot all over the Calcasieu Lake marsh. Big Lake, Prien Lake, LNG, Chopique Bayou, West Cove, you name it. If you can take the cold weather, run out and catch some reds, then try my friend's Grilled Redfish on the half shell recipe.
Big Lake Fishing report Update: May 28, 2011: Clear Blue/green water is up into Prien Lake, I'm told. Lake Charles fishermen are limiting out on specks, reds and flounder in the LNG and Turner's bay areas before 10 AM. Salinity levels are high and the trout should stick around until fresh water drives them south. But until then, grab a rod and take a kid fishing ! If you see an 2 old dudes and one hot lady in a blue and white Skeeter or a red and white Nautic Star in the area around the 2nd week of June, wave at us....but don't come too close. The lady is dangerous with a top dog lure.
